from the Between Realities series

Normal Mode is about our ability to continue living an ordinary life even when reality itself stops feeling ordinary.

Everything around us can change too quickly, the familiar world can begin to crack, and yet we still wake up in the morning, make plans, meet friends, drink coffee or a cocktail, and try to notice the good things. Gradually, what once seemed impossible becomes part of everyday life.

For me, there is a little irony in this work. A woman with a cocktail, a sleeping cat, palm trees, and a beautiful city exist alongside the cracks running through the painting. As if everything were perfectly normal. Although we know it is not quite so — and the distorted proportions of the objects and figures hint at this too.

The golden cracks, inspired by the aesthetics of kintsugi, become part of this new normality. They remain visible, while life around them continues.
