This painting began with Parhelion looking out at the clouds one night, years ago, and thinking he should create a work entitled “Night Clouds.” Late in 2023 the title “Nocturne” suddenly came into his mind and he knew that would apply to the work. He had only barely begun it , by applying the black background, when he had a very painful emotional encounter that resulted in his putting down the work for many weeks. When he returned to it, what burst forth onto the canvas during the course of a single afternoon and evening were the pent-up emotions of desire and longing for fulfilment that had been preying on his mind and heart for months; a song of fertility and consummation that had to be called “Nocturne: Conception (A Love Song)”. Quick-drying acrylic paint emphasises the urgency of release expressed in the work.
